Art History
- Art history faculty members maintain an active research agenda and enrich their classrooms with expertise and familiarity with the latest scholarship. The faculty has garnered numerous awards from prestigious institutions like Harvard, Princeton, and Yale universities; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and more.
- Art history faculty and students take advantage of the university’s proximity to world-class museums and historic sites in New York City and the Hudson Valley through various field trips to enrich the curriculum. Additionally, many art history students study abroad during the academic year, and department faculty teach a unique “on-site” summer program in Europe for art history credit.
- Small class sizes of 15 to 35 students allow for close interaction between faculty and students. The breadth of courses offered, ranging from prehistory to the present and covering many areas of the world, is rarely found at other SUNY institutions.
- The Art History Department maintains close ties to the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on campus, allowing our students access to original works of art. Students interested in pursuing museum careers may enroll in a specialized museum studies course offered every year by the department.
- Students engage in research projects with the department’s outstanding teacher-scholars, including curating an Andy Warhol exhibition at the Dorsky Museum. Students also have the opportunity to work closely with renowned scholars from other institutions through the Art History Association, which organizes lectures for an annual spring symposium.
- Art history students participate in a wide range of internships, and alumni pursue a variety of careers in museums and historic sites. Graduates have become curators, conservators, historic preservationists, archivists, librarians, and gallerists, and many go on to attend graduate school at prestigious institutions.
